To celebrate International Dog Day on Aug. 26, the Green&White hosted its first alumni dog contest
Congratulations to University of Saskatchewan (USask) graduate Karla Nagy (BA’20, MPA’24) and her Shih Tzu-Bichon Frisé dog, Rio!
On Aug. 26—International Dog Day—Karla and Rio were selected as the winners of the Green&White’s “Paws, Pose, Prize” draw. They won a USask and Huskies dog-themed prize package from Shop USask.
Thank you to our USask alumni and Green&White readers for taking part in this fun contest. Below are some of the dogs that were entered into the draw by USask graduates. A full album of all entries can be viewed on Facebook.
RIO
Karla Nagy (BA’20, MPA’24) entered Rio, a two-year-old Shih Tzu-Bichon Frisé. “Whether Rio is playing a game of fetch, protecting his nine-month-old baby brother (and stealing his toys), or enjoying a puppy cone at the lake, he is always up for a fun day with his family,” Karla writes.
BLUE AND HERSHEY
Jillian Benko (BEd’26) entered Blue and Hershey, five-year-old Weimaraners. “They are sisters from different litters,” Jillian writes. “Blue is the older sister and is definitely the boss. She loves cuddles and lounging around the house. Hershey loves playing ball and sleeping under blankets.”
STANLEY
Seanine Warrington (BA’99) entered Stanley, a 10-year-old Labradoodle. “Stanley loves life, treats, fetching, and hates flies,” Seanine writes. “His favourite food is spaghetti bolognese.”
STEVIE
Marissa Pilat (BComm’25) entered Stevie, a two-year Husky cross. “Stevie (full name Stevie Licks) is a friendly pup who loves all things life,” Marissa writes. “She too is an alumni, but from the Saskatoon Dog Rescue. When Stevie isn’t napping, she loves to zoom around, go on walks, play with her toys, meet new friends, and smell new things. She is an A+ cheerleader as she has the Husky scream down pat! Go Huskies!”
PIPER
Jody Peace (BA’01) entered Piper, a six-year-old Yorkie. “Piper is a recent addition to our household that has brought so much love,” Jody writes. “She has the best smiles and loves to smother our other dog, Ruby, with kisses!"
BUCKY
Larry Kwok (BA’98, BComm’01) entered Bucky, a 10-year-old Pug/Terrier. Larry describes Bucky as “loyal, friendly, energetic, goofy. He fights (and) has conversations with rocks. Figured out how to open his own kennel and lower the window in the car. Happiest when all his people are with him; gets upset when the group splits up. He is everybody’s friend!”
SKYE
Erin Dueck (CGS’21, BSC’21, MPP’23) entered Skye, an almost one-year-old Yellow Lab-Golden Retriever dog. “Skye is full of energy, a total social butterfly, and loves swimming,” Erin writes. “She’s a great hiker, too, and learns tricks quickly.”
STEVE
Angela Trefiak (BSCAGB’19) entered Steve, a German Shepherd. “Steve is a three-year-old German Shepherd full of attitude,” Angela writes. “He enjoys playing outside with his red ball, chasing squirrels, and sleeping on leather couches.”
LENNY
Glenda Beauchamp (BA’02, BSNT’06) entered Lenny, a seven-month-old mixed-breed dog. “Lenny is a dog of the people—he loves everyone and everything, especially water sports,” Glenda writes. “He came from the SPCA this spring and is the happiest guy around.”
ROCKY
Dr. Meagan Wenzel (PharmD’25) entered Rocky, a seven-month-old Mini Bernedoodle. “Rocky is a very energetic boy who loves to explore and play fetch,” Meagan writes. “His favourite things are treats and going for walks.”
TACO
Stacey Schitka (CPAG’25, BSCAGB’25) entered Taco, a 10-year-old Great Pyrenees-Collie dog. “Don’t let his size fool you; he’s a gentle giant who’s happiest when he’s getting treats,” Stacey writes.
VICO
Ashley Muller (BSCAND’26) entered Vico, a six-year-old Chocolate Lab. “Vico is the most lovable, crazy girl you’ll ever meet, and she was named after the infamous Sask. chocolate milk,” Ashley writes. “She loves to go fishing and walks through the pasture and always manages to make my day a little better.”
NUGE
Keanna McNabb-Brass (BSKI’23) entered Nuge, a 10-year-old Chihuahua. Keanna describes Nuge as “goofy, outdoorsy, loves walks, loves to play, soft, huge fan of Nugent Hopkins, loves everyone and all dogs—just overall a really good boy.”
GIO
Kim Hartsook (BMusEd’95) entered Gio, a two-year-old Morkie. “Gio is best defined as trouble in a floofy package,” Kim writes. “He knows the command ‘sit’ and that is as far as we have got. He is named after the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas.”
LUX
Shelby Waugh (BSN’26) entered Lux, a 14-year-old Jack Russell Terrier mix. Shelby describes Lux as “the sweetest little dog with an absolute heart of gold. Everyone she meets loves her. Always greets you with a smile and a tail wag.”
MAVERICK
Jamye Ladebruk-Cathcart (BA’01, BSN’11) entered Maverick, an eight-month-old Bernese Mountain Dog. Jamye describes Maverick as “silly, goofy, and very affectionate. Picture a piece of Velcro cracking jokes while it’s stuck to your leg. That’s my dog!”
WALTER
Jordana Knoblauch (BComm’17) entered Walter, a two-and-a-half-year-old Golden Retriever. “Walter is everyone’s reminder to enjoy the joys of everyday life. After his near-death experience and rescue in December 2024, Walter prioritizes happiness and is everyone’s friend,” Jordana writes. “He enjoys garden tour walks in the neighbourhood, paddle boarding on the river, (and) ice cream cones from Crunchy Dog. Life is good.”
BOWZER
Carrie Verishagen (BSNT’08, CBUS’24) entered Bowzer, a five-year-old King Schnauzer (mini Schnauzer and King Charles Spaniel). “Bowzer is a loving, cuddly little troublemaker with a big personality. Named after the Mario character my kids loved, he definitely grew into the name,” Carrie writes. “As a six-week-old pup, he battled Parvo and almost died but powered through—further proving how strong and mighty he is. His favourite thing to do is lounge on the top of the couch and bark and chase away anyone who walks by ‘protecting’ his family. Underneath his tough-guy personality, he is a total sweetheart. He always knows when you are sad and will cuddle up, lick you, and do whatever he can to make you feel better. He will also eat almost anything and can somehow finish a chewy in about 30 seconds!”
HENRY
Maureen Weber (BA’79) entered Henry, a five-year-old Border Collie-Husky-Shepherd dog. “Henry is a Border Collie/Husky mix who, unlike dogs that merely bark, engages in howlingly compelling conversations with anyone who speaks Husky,” Maureen writes. “The most fluent in our family is Penny, our three-year-old granddaughter. In typical Border Collie style, Henry often crouches and directs his laser focus (with his one good eye) toward something I cannot yet see. Henry is a ‘tripawd’ and can run faster than most dogs who have four legs, so if it’s a jackrabbit, I know I’m in trouble. I adopted Henry from New Hope Dog Rescue in Saskatoon, but I think he rescued me.”
ELTON JOHN
Brit Tastad (BComm’12, MBA’23) entered Elton John, a four-year-old Standard Poodle. “Elton is our standard poodle and very much a member of the family,” Brit writes. “He’s equal parts handsome, hilarious, and affectionate, with a big personality and an even bigger heart. One of his favourite outings is a walk around the USask campus, where there are plenty of people to see, paths to explore, and good smells to investigate. At home, he loves roaming our acreage and being wherever we are. Elton has a way of making ordinary days more fun, and life is simply better with him in it.”
